A dark and delectably moody rock success from Velvet Sun, “Empire” immerses with a gripping post-punk pulse and array of melodic guitar/synth interplay. The band, formed in NYC and based in South Florida, craft a compelling sound — resembling a cross of Suede, Slowdive, and Manic Street Preachers in its balancing of aggressive ardency and textured guitar dynamics. “C’mon say you want me and I’ll be satisfied,” the beckoning vocals let out during a memorable sequence, representative of that consuming ardor, while intriguing synth additions follow in further showcasing Velvet Sun’s palpable atmospheric chops.
“Empire” comes via the band’s 4-track EP of the same name, which was co-produced and engineered by Ferny Coipel at Shack North Studio. From the glam-friendly nostalgia of “Star” to the shoegaze=y beauty within “Wonder,” the EP is certainly worth diving into. Its title track invigorates certainly as well, deftly shifting between “all our the empire…” foreboding introspections and more bustling expanses. “The war’s already lost because you’re everything to me,” visions of bleakness and isolation combine enjoyably with the instrumentation’s ferocious vigor.
