twins – “Dust”

A spacious atmospheric invigoration, fit for traversing wide sprawls of nature, compels across “Dust” — the new single from twins. Trickling guitars and clanking drum machine integrations assemble for a beautifully melodic drive, complemented by string-laden somberness haunting in the background during the track’s second half. Various effects — the “glitches and scratches,” within — are reflective of the production’s embrace of spotaneity; feedback, electric buzzes, and imperfections are cherished within the mix.

twins represents the moniker of South East London based musician, tattooist, and visual artist Loz KeyStone; he’s caught our ears in the past under his name, where he has released instrumental albums, with tracks like “How Is It” and “Nothing Wrong.” KeyStone has also played guitar for the live iteration of Rocheman, in addition to improvised duet project SURRENDER with drummer Harry Pope.

With twins and the project’s third single “Dust,” KeyStone infuses lush vocal introspection within hypnotic instrumentation — resembling Radiohead in its tendency to expand from quaintly impactful guitar lines and serene vocals into a more expansive emotive power following the culminating build-up. Ghostly vocals ascend into a stirring ardency past the two-minute turn — “this is a tiny life and I don’t mind,” — and into a final minute that consumes in its sporadic vocal emergences and layered, textural instrumentation. Ruminations on living within this modern world combine with an impactful, atmospheric production for a standout success from twins.

The project’s songwriting, and “Dust” in general, took inspiration from KeyStone’s 2024 travels to the Sierra Nevada mountain range in Northern Columbia. There, he spent time working with Ayahuasca and contemplating deep existential questions; the result was an ensuing desire to write songs, which culminates here and throughout his upcoming debut album, Caravan.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
