Intertwining Delta blues no-frills passion with a gothic Americana tint, “Walk With Me Through The Fire” is a riveting new track from The Curse of K.K. Hammond. The UK-based slide guitarist and singer-songwriter channels a thoroughly compelling film-like setting in the track and its accompanying video — lovably inspired by the Western genre and greats like Ennio Morricone.
The track’s music video is a fantastic, cinematic ride. A solemn spoken-word prologue begins: “This story brings us to Death Letter Canyon back in 1886.” The setting is firmly established, as is the sense of mythos — where time-traveling potions given out by “The Bone Collector” play a role in this time-hopping journey. Depictions of a dusty gunfight give way to the twangy guitar emergences, opening the track with riveting atmospherics. “You know today’s a perfect day to die,” Hammond’s melodic, stylish vocals let out — complemented wonderfully by Ian Davidson’s moody cello work and Kaspar ‘Berry’ Rapkin’s slide guitar.
“Walk with me through the fire,” the vocals continue around mid-point, complemented by ghostly cello and preceding Mariachi-style trumpet (from Lewis Taylor) as visions of taking a town, and burning it down, conjure a menacing entrancement. The clap-laden “tonight we ride, into the fire,” hook takes hold thereafter. The music video’s depictions of a saloon setting and whiskey being poured adds to the grimy atmosphere, especially as the trio of gunslingers shed their masks to reveal a skeletal sight. “Walk With Me Through The Fire” is a standout success that leaves a strong impression in its cinematic stylishness and alt-country aesthetical heart.
