Paul James Project – “Speak to Me in Silence”

/

A heartfelt new track from Paul James Project, “Speak to Me in Silence” offers a soaring introspection on the enduring impact of positive parent-child relationships and the ticking clock of mortality. “When you’re a kid, your dad can seem like a giant to you in so many ways,” Paul says. “They’re your hero. It’s heartbreaking seeing them get sick and having those roles reversed. The song is an expression of those conflicting feelings, whilst honouring the magic of everything he meant. Miss you dad.”

Jangly guitars provide a breezy accessibility right away, building into the “when I was just a boy,” lyrical retrospections. The comparisons of one’s father to a giant-like figure are emotively impactful, eloquently capturing the enormous role of parents on their children. A somber yet true perspective arises alongside, conveying how the role of caretaker — passing from father to child — in the wake of a parent’s illness can be brutal, though also an affirmation of mutual love.

Production from Grammy-nominated producer Chris Potter provides a crisply melodic charm throughout, ranging from harmonious uplifting “there will be tomorrow,” brightness in the verses to a moving title-touting radiance. “Tell me with your eyes, speak to me in silence,” the vocals enamor during this central, replay-inducing chorus — artfully conveying how certain loving emotions and connections, particularly between father and son, do not need words to express. “Speak to Me in Silence” is a resonating display of songwriting sincerity from Paul James Project.
