Dreamy synths and twangy guitars consume across “The Girl with No Tattoo,” a standout single from Nathaniel Paul that plays as an ode to individuality. Paul has caught our ears many times in the past — spanning from his solo output in last year’s standout album Turpentine, to his role as one-half of acclaimed husband-wife duo The Bergamot. “The Girl with No Tattoo” takes particular inspiration from his wife. “Tattoos have become so widespread that not having one feels unique in itself,” Paul says. “This song is a love letter to those who embrace their unmarked selves in a world adorned with ink.”
Lush acoustic strums, a playful bass bounce, and steady rhythms craft a serenely enticing introduction. Paul’s caressing vocal introspection arrives thereafter amidst spacey synth infusions, emitting a title-touting refrain with hooky charm. “She’s a girl with no tattoo,” Paul lets out as jangling guitars and melodic synths intertwine. A heavier bass pulse enamors around mid-point, shifting cohesively back into the synth/guitar interplay. A tender guitar lead takes hold into the final 30 seconds, then ending with satiating finality within a catching guitar and synth interplay. “The Girl with No Tattoo” is another replay-inducing delight from Nathaniel Paul, who excels here with a celebration of self-confidence and the embracing of oneself.
