A dreamy rock introspection stirs on “Movies With Your Friends,” a new single from California-based artist Ian Connaughton. The first single from his forthcoming album, “Movies With Your Friends” features the magnetic vocals of Anna Whitts. Her dynamic range spans from lushly subdued into the more invigorated “I guess I know the end / It’s just how it started…” acknowledgement into twanging guitar atmospherics. The serene vocal layers — “again and again…” — are especially compelling into the hypnotic outro.
Connaughton describes the single as “about friendships/relationships falling out and yearning to reconnect, but knowing there’s no hope.” He elaborates further on its themes and creative process:
” I wanted the lyrics to reflect watching a good movie and knowing it’s coming to an end, but wanting to hold on as long as you can. I posted my instrumental and idea on reddit asking for help on how to approach the song, and was reached out by a handful of singers asking if they could get a shot singing over the song. Anna Whitts was one of them, and I immediately was drawn to her approach and asked her to officially be apart of the song. I recorded, mixed, and produced the entire track from my bedroom.”
