Salt Lake City-based quartet Von Masse craft an immersive blend of dreamy pop, psych-rock, and shoegaze throughout their debut full-length album, COIL, out on March 28th. Described as “a deep dive into the cycles of love and loss,” the release already stands as one of my favorites this year — consistently impressing with melodic earworms that span cohesively from lush synth-laden soundscapes and impassioned rock hooks.
Amongst the many highlights within, “Tears for Who” intrigues with its moody guitar jangling and eerie vocal developments. “So, tell me darling,” they let out during organ-touched brightness during an enjoyable escalation. Crunchy guitar distortion and nocturnal synths further that gripping atmosphere, then shifting seamlessly back into the steadier verses. “Tears for Who” allures in its tonal variety and magnetic vocal layers.
The album’s finale, “Psych(e)” invigorates with its dynamic range as well, from brisk psych-rock to dreamy synth warmness. “I just wanna love you,” smitten vocal sentiments consume amidst a swell of spacey synth effects and twanging guitar undercurrents, building with palpably climactic allure into the mystique-filled guitar pushes around 01:35. The flashes of excitable vocals enamor alongside heady synths and hypnotic guitars.
