The fourth album from Twice Dark, Telekinetic touts a gripping blend of synth-pop, goth-rock, post-punk, and beyond. The Bloomington, Indiana-based project of Josh Kreuzman shows a knack for hooky immediacy and haunting soundscapes alike, showcased across these seven delightful tracks.
Opening the album with a twinkling intrigue, “Night Shifts” builds upon glimmering keys into moody guitar twangs and a steady percussive pulse. A late-night ’80s nostalgia emanates. “Sun setting in the west, dark mist is taking grip,” the vocals let out, furthering the already-enveloping soundscape. Creeping shadows and neon lights are abundant. The ensuing “Invisible Man” balances dark synth tones with a more playful MGMT-esque touch; the “write your name into the sand,” hook dazzles with its ascending charm, as well — showing the project as capable of hooks both in the lighter and darker atmospheric realms.
Another highlight, “Time Traveler” infuses a post-punk bass maneuvering and New Order-esque guitars with shimmering synth injections — resulting in another replay-inducing success. Meanwhile, the title serves as a satiating finale — covered more in-depth here last October, when it first caught our ears. Telekinetic is a stylishly memorable success from Twice Dark.
