Norwegian band Transcending Into the Unknown strut a powerful rock sound on The Journey, an EP that succeeds in its blend of soaring ’80s rock nostalgia and more menacing metal-tinged pursuits. The four members come from eclectic musical backgrounds, ranging from punk-rock expertise to dreamy vocal entrancement.
A beautifully atmospheric opener, “Winternight” begins with emotive guitar tones and haunting vocals. The raspy tonal character reminds of Nick Cave, compelling alongside descriptions of “this cold winterlight,” and seeing “a glimmer ever so slight.” An exhilarating push of passionate guitars takes hold about a minute thereafter, showcasing the band’s versatility between more subdued soundscapes and bursting rock charisma. The second half continues to enamor, featuring Eva Halsetrønning Rambraut’s more serenely melodic vocal disposition. The mixture of Rambraut’s dreamy vocals, Robert “pzyroks” Dahl’s growling presence, and Filip Dahl more traditional vocals drives a dynamic, satiating structural ascent.
A variety of highlights continue to show throughout, including “The Valley.” Soaring guitars are evident from the get-go here, as the growling vocals return with a beholding of “the setting sun.” This initial introspection develops with vigor, culminating in a gorgeous “horse with no name,” multi-vocal hook. Bass-y ruminations and ’80s-feeling guitar power follow, thoroughly appealing. “Noir” is another standout, emphasizing Rambraut’s consuming vocals again alongside expressive guitar work, while “Transcending Into the Unknown” caps off this excellent EP with tender rock immersion.
