A riveting new track from Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist Scott Goldbaum, “Killer Crowd” contemplates mortality with artful relatability within a resonating rock sound. Multiple personal inspirations arose the thematic focus, both in the passing of Goldbaum’s uncle and Goldbaum himself being diagnosed with a health issue. “While navigating this deep loss, I was suddenly diagnosed with my own heart condition and began to write an album’s worth of songs that continue to contemplate mortality and the newfound cemented perspective that comes from self-dispossession,” he explains.
Goldbaum continues: “It asks whether or not it’s a crime to perpetually miss someone when we’re already running out of time because of death’s assurance. It reflects on how taboo it is to discuss dying in the first place, requiring people to grieve in corners.”
The production builds with enjoyable momentum, beginning with pulsing, sporadic guitar tones as “…the world I know,” contemplations escalate into a more feverish vigor. The heightened vocals and more constant guitar presence combine for an invigorating central rise. The final minute’s bridge envelops in its dreamy synth touches and multi-layered vocal tones, moving seamlessly into the pulsing guitars and more expressive vocal adornments. “Killer Crowd” is a thorough success from Scott Goldbaum.
