Invoking the wonder of travels and discoveries that arise during them, De Mirabilibus Mundi is the new album from Italian artist Moreno Viglione. Amongst its highlights, the track “The Fabulous Mustache” embodies the compelling sound shown throughout the full-length — namely, a folk-forward captivation that exudes a literary-fit sort of time and place, like the sounds of something travelers would be greeted to as they enter a dusty tavern in a land far away from home.
Throughout this track and De Mirabilibus Mundi, Viglione takes particular inspiration from ancient illustrated maps, Jules Verne’s novels, and the chronicled travels of Marco Polo and other adventurers. “The Fabulous Mustache” begins with a frolicking range of guitar work, ranging from pulsing intrigue to trickling beauty, echoing a classic Mediterranean folk sound. The additions of whistling bolster the seafaring feeling, like crewmates on a ship assembling vocally to pit-pattering on a ship’s wooden frame. The three-minute turn enamors further with twangy guitar lines, driving into a satisfying conclusion. “The Fabulous Mustache” is a stirring success from Viglione, coming via the stellar De Mirabilibus Mundi, streaming in full below:
