Loving Backwards – ‘Rubbish Twilights’

/

A psychedelic pop and rock enamoring take hold on Rubbish Twilights, the debut album from Loving Backwards. The band’s primary songwriter, Or Izekson, is based in the remote countryside of Ostfriesland, North-West Germany — in an off-the-grid commune, where he moved with his family last summer as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict intensified. His songwriting and the band’s high quality of musicianship results in a fantastic psychedelic success.

Opening track “Finally” captivates in its buoyant, melodic charm and upbeat lyrical introspection. “Finally I can set my eyes to see,” vocals commence amidst lush guitar tones. An ensuing “la-la-la,” vocal exuberance continues that celebratory sense of catharsis, wherein one’s personal clarity is regained. A dreamier intrigue shows on the subsequent “Loving Backwards,” where twangy guitars and spacey synths combine amidst lush vocal entrancement. Its title-touting hook is especially magnetic, bringing forth a haunting dream-pop quality. Rubbish Twilights commences with a strong one-two punch that showcases both vibrant rock/pop and dreamy atmospherics.

Another standout track, “Tied” is a blissfully psychedelic pop gem with harmonious vocal layers and hazy key illumination. Pit-pattering percussion and gentle glistening expand throughout, and into a memorable finale where ruminating acoustics move into a final dash of keys. A brighter psych-pop flair also stirs on “Turquoise Flame,” while album finale “Nothing But Air” spans from jangling, subdued heart-aching to more expansive psychedelic splendor. Rubbish Twilights is a consistently melodic, harmonious success of a debut album from Loving Backwards.

“Tied” and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
