J Dulva – ‘Musings from a Coastal Prairie’

/

Ranging from bluesy rock appeal to lush jazz guitar sophistication, Musings from a Coastal Prairie is a delightful new album from J Dulva. The Eunice, Louisiana-based project of multi-instrumentalist Jack Miller audibly showcases a deep appreciation for “jazz guitarists across time,” per the artist, mentioning legends like Pat Metheny, Wes Montgomery, and Joe Pass. Miller recorded and arranged all aspects of the album himself, representing an enjoyably personal display of his musical talents and inspirations.

Opening the album, “A Night in Tunisia” wastes no time showcasing Miller’s expressive guitar work. Serene chordal pulsations enamor as a pluckier lead emanates, set amidst subtle rhythmic shakes. A serenely meditative charm flows through, setting up for the subsequently bluesy rock charm of “Still Blues.” Mellow guitars and reflective organs flow with seamless entrancement, impressing with its ample mood and overall suave mystique.

Another standout, “Stolen Moments” infuses brassy sophistication within a jazzy guitar trickling — feeling at home in a New Orleans blues/jazz club. Meanwhile, “Chianti” impresses with its dreamy rock introspection, as twangy guitar delights and gentle washes of percussion converge beautifully. Musings from a Coastal Prairie is abundant in quality songwriting and dynamic multi-instrumental performances from J Dulva.

J Dulva also plays live every Monday, with his band Counting Coup, at Poolside Studios.

“A Night in Tunisia” and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
