Indoor Friends – “Psyayayduck”

/

Balancing drives for self-betterment with the sweet allure of escapism, “Psyayayduck” is a memorable rocker from Boston-based band Indoor Friends. “I’d rather play Mario Kart all day, than think about the breakdown underway,” the fervent vocals admit alongside melodic alt-rock guitar tones, following recounting of a therapy session. A punchy rock charisma — with ’90s and ’00s nostalgia — emanates consistently throughout. The themes within are particularly relatable in a strife-filled world, filled with ongoing pressures and impacts on mental health. Sources of escape, like songwriting and video games, can meanwhile provide a sense of catharsis and personal achievement.

“I am a champion, on my Nintendo,” the vocals let out during a pulsing bridge. “But in reality I couldn’t even write an end to this bridge,” they continue, capturing the relatable wit in trying to get things done, though moving to a more familiar comfort when things get overwhelming. The track’s title is reflective of the exasperating tendencies that stress brings on, as well. “We named the song after the exasperated sound that the Pokemon Psyduck makes because we felt it fit the songs tone,” the band explains. The video game referencing is also bolstered by synths in that aforementioned bridge, which uses “the same reverb as old SNES
games,” per the band.

The memorable “Psyayayduck” represents Indoor Friends’ first single in two years, and we’re excited to hear what’s next.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
