Gav Moran – ‘Requiem’ EP

Dublin-based artist Gav Moran unveils a gorgeous piano-driven ambient sound across his new EP, Requiem. The release explores a different aspect of loss within each track, capturing the process of grief and acceptance into the culmination of healing and transformation. “This is a story of the stages of loss particularly after the departure of someone close,” explains Moran, who recorded the EP in his personal studio.

The opening title track conveys a rush of tragic realization in its brisk, trickling piano work — representing the sudden realization of loss and the ensuing quick grasp of despair. Somber strings weave subtly in the background, while the keys maintain a streaming flow of emotion throughout. Both iterations of “Ascension,” both the original and concluding slowed/reverb version, strut a more graceful melancholy — more stately and reflective in its piano work and backing synth pads, as if finally coming to terms with the sudden loss in a way beyond immediate grief.

The brighter warmness within “Acceptance” portrays precisely that, invoking a sense of welcoming as illuminated piano layers coalesce cohesively within a playful pluckiness. Meanwhile, “Perpetuum” continues the gentle acoustic piano currents, concluding this masterfully emotive EP from Gav Moran with a comforting glow.

“Requiem” is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Obscure Ambient.
