Israel-based singer-songwriter Eyal Assulin unveils a captivating, moody post-punk and synth-pop intrigue throughout his debut EP, EVERLAST. The four-track release captivates with its blend of jangly guitars, moody synths, and heartfelt lyricism, evoking both melancholic introspection and a late-night allure. Assulin’s ability to seamlessly fuse post-punk’s shadowy textures with synth-pop’s atmospheric warmth results in an EP that feels both intimate and cinematic.
The EP commences with the enamoring “Northern Wind,” as jangling guitars and lushly introspective vocals lead a melodically warming sound. “So come with me, I cannot hide the way I feel,” Assulin sings, then comparing love to a battlefield in its heart-breaking tumults. Haunting backing vocal effects and a post-punk rhythmic feeling arise during the “break your heart,” segment, furthering the palpably enjoyable emotion. The ensuing “The Spider” casts a more eerie entrancement, weaving moody piano alongside lyrical ruminations on the fleeting nature of memory. Twangy guitars and nocturnal piano intertwine for an especially atmospheric finale, reveling in a darkly gripping soundscape.
“Endless Signs” continues Assulin’s tendency for sincere songwriting, lamenting the state of “losing my mind,” and feelings of “shaking inside,” amidst unsettling synths. “Endless signs are hard to define,” his vocals let out, traversing into a beautiful saxophone blaring and enhancing the late-night vibe. The contrast between spacious subduedness and brassy invigoration results in a climactically sating production throughout.
Concluding the EP, its title track ventures through jangly guitars and bouncy piano — as Assulin asks “how long will it last?” in reference to life’s journey. Yearning for something greater, perhaps, within the contemplations on mortality prove stirring within the cohesive melding of synths, piano, and guitars (the electric guitar work comes courtesy of Philip Schachner, from previously featured act Tempest Euphonic). EVERLAST is an enveloping showcase in quality songwriting and evident mood from Eyal Assulin.
