French electronic music producer Antoine Guigan succeeds with dynamic appeal across the No Pants Allowed EP, succeeding from the downtempo house intrigue of opener “STEPPENWÖLFE” to the jazzy piano/bass interplay within the enveloping “MAGMA CREATURES.”
Opening the album, “STEPPENWÖLFE” immerses with a spacey entrancement — melding flashes of lush instrumentation with a steady rhythmic drive, embrace a house-friendly flow in its hypnotic captivation. The track was written as a tribute to German-Swiss poet, novelist, and painter Hermann Hesse. The subsequent “LE JARDIN” struts a more elegant disposition, intertwining ghostly backing vocal effects with harmonious piano and orchestral ruminations. “Casey Is Rad” then brings listeners back into an energized realm. This late-night electro-pop production is a re-envisioning of the original track from Guigan’s Sailors EP, which we featured last year.
The EP’s second half continues to captivate with a stylish, melodic charm. “MAGMA CREATURES” moves with a free-flowing entrancement, as jazzy piano layers exude a delectably unsettling appeal. The angular piano feelings drive into a solemn, spacious organ thereafter — crafting an immersive soundscape that succeeds in its experimental ambitions and cohesive organ-led shift into the ensuing “KINDNESS SUBVERSION.” This memorable standout is written for trans people with a message of love, emphasizing how “Christ was a rebel fighting for love and acceptance.” The EP marks another overall success from Antoine Guigan.
