annu – ‘EXPERIENCE’

A serenely hypnotic electro-pop appeal shows throughout EXPERIENCE, the memorable new album from annu. The Austin, TX-based artist infuses these melodic productions with a thematic emphasis on the transformation into motherhood. annu’s work has aimed to inspire “awe and wonder,” — something that certainly shows here. “Motherhood has only strengthened this mission, giving me a renewed commitment to creating art that fosters presence, connection, and reverence for the world around us,” annu explains.

“Time” opens the album with a lovely assortment of lush synths and dreamy vocal affections. Crisp synth arps emerge into a resonating lead, admitting that “it’s impossible to see what’s coming,” while ruminating on the passage of time. The album artfully examines our place in time and space, intertwining these heady thematic sentiments with a gripping electro-pop expanse. Another standout track, “Water” maneuvers with a more buzzing spaciousness and eerie vocal disposition initially. Shifty percussion and howling-like vocal effects past the one-minute turn invoke a trip-hop feeling, culminating in a cathartic “let me come apart,” effervescence; the production is a thorough showcase in atmosphere and captivating melodic unveiling, with a Beach House-esque second half.

The highlights continue throughout, from the swell from nocturnal pop intrigue to beautiful dream-pop heights within “Origin” to the finale “Floating,” which weaves wordless vocals with an intoxicating, serene synth-driven entrancement. EXPERIENCE is a riveting overall success from annu, catpuring the journey of matrescence and life itself within a dreamy pop composure.

“Water” and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
