Alan Goldberg – ‘CreateBecome’

The memorable fifth album from Austin-based composer Alan Goldberg, CreateBecome stirs in its alluring fusion of prog-rock, jazz, swing, and beyond. Piano often provides the basis for many of the gripping melodies within, playing as a consistently dazzling component amidst gorgeous orchestral flourishes and sharp structural twists and turns. Themes of growth and personal evolution show artfully throughout. “The overall arc of the album are musical themes derived from my observations about living and growing,” Goldberg explains.

Described by Goldberg as “a statement of continuity and permanence,” “Unbroken Chain” is an apt opener, firmly showcasing his knack for eclectic tonal pursuits in its initial rush of brassy exuberance and twinkling piano adornments. The final couple minutes enamor with soaring electric guitar infusions, melding seamlessly amidst vibrant piano expressions. “Essential Innocence” pairs a jazzy rhythm section with a more elegant piano outpouring, lush and graceful in its precision, while “Questions Like Blue Sky” succeeds with radiant allure as bursting brass lead the melodic charge.

A particular highlight comes in the album’s title track: “CreateBecome (I.Receive II.Infuse III.Release).” The rhythms prove dynamic, from slight pit-pattering to more pounding passion, as brassy swells and frolicking piano intertwine cohesively. Heartfelt strings emerge in the second half, excelling with spine-tingling charm as glistening keys flow breezily alongside. CreateBecome is a powerful success from Alan Goldberg, who succeeds in conveying introspective themes amidst a colorful prog-rock and jazz blend.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
