Tiny Tomboy – ‘Psychic Scar’

/

Denver-based band Tiny Tomboy unleash an impassioned rock spell throughout their new album, Psychic Scar. Comprising singer/guitarist Eliza Neiman-Golden, drummer Sam Seymour, and bassist Ethan Gould, Tiny Tomboy impress across with consistently climactic, hook-filled productions that blend nostalgic fuzz-laden alternative and modern rock/pop intertwining, reminiscent of Wolf Alice. The production, recorded live, emits a spontaneous ardency and enjoyably melodic charm within.

“Only” wastes no time in kicking off the album with a dynamic grip, seamlessly blending between exhilarating distortion and quainter introspections. “You’re too kind to turn me on,” Neiman-Golden sings, escalating into the feverish “want me only,” refrain as a grungy passion takes hold. The complicated pursuits of finding true connection are conveyed artfully there, within a contagious rock appeal. “Gabriel” follows with a more hopeful outlook on adoration, as the vocals are clearly smitten in “I just want you to write songs about me,” pining — “I just wanna be around you.” The opening one-two punch is commanding in its punchy rock traversals and thematic ruminations on finding love.

Another clear standout comes in “Vegas,” a delectably scathing rocker. “Laughed in your face on the sidewalk,” precedes a sense of betrayal, pushing into rather critical imagery: “You’re a vape cart on the ground / Outside sevvies, cracked and brown.” The comparison to something so disposable, and replaceable, is venomously gripping with a hard-rocking edge, while “Space Waste” ensues in showcasing a dreamier initial foray. Psychic Scar is an enveloping rock success from Tiny Tomboy.

“Only” and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
