A vibrant and romantic orchestral-led sound emanates throughout Chanson à La Lune, the new album from Robert McGinty. The Manchester, England-based artist composed and performed all the music within, showcasing an alluring modern melding of classical and baroque music. The release’s inspiration came about as McGinty listened to some noted inspirations. “I was thinking about Spanish guitar music and listening to the guitar playing of John Williams and Julian Bream,” he says. An ensuing desire to create pieces for the Spanish guitar and piano, in addition to orchestral and quartet pieces, resulted in the ravishing Chanson à La Lune.
“The Awakening” opens the album aptly, unveiling a gorgeous array of instrumentation fit for ballrooms and new love. The frolicking orchestral array provides an effervescent glow that’s apparent throughout much of the album. “Western Gavotte” ensues with a similar vibrancy, particularly in its heightened intensity past the one-minute turn. Elsewhere, “The Stormy Sea Voyage to the Hebrides” ushers in a cinematic-feeling rhythmic stomp, which gives way to bursting strings that illuminate with a compelling fervor. The aforementioned Spanish guitar influence shines on the album’s title track, beautifully and stunning in its lush guitar work and harmonious sense of reflection. Chanson à La Lune is a delightful classical success from Robert McGinty.
