Olivia Valentine – ‘The Couch Cushion EP’

An emotively melodic rock appeal shines throughout The Couch Cushion EP, coming via New Orleans-based band Olivia Valentine. Led by Philip Korosec and Geoff Hrabar, Olivia Valentine’s consuming alt-rock sound also explores a variety of personal topics — from Hrabar’s love for his beloved, departed dog on “RIDE” to the deeply affecting “Tangerine Sofa,” written about Korosec’s father’s struggles with alcoholism. The EP also features a new lineup for the band, which now includes bassist Larissa Dietzel, multi-instrumentalist Thomas Dietzel, and drummer Daniel Bishop.

“And Now Just Be” opens the EP with gripping momentum, expanding steadily from pit-pattering percussion and twangy guitar layers. “Blades of grass brush across his weary feet, this ground that once was sacred now hurts his feet,” the vocals let out with intrigue, excelling thereafter into an emotive, string-laden flourish. The opener thoroughly excels in both trickling guitar ardor and orchestral illumination — its production reminding of In Rainbows, in that sense. The track’s music video also enthralls, thoroughly cinematic in its forested and aquatic settings alike; the depictions of being submerged resonates within the track’s ardent conclusion, especially.

The highlights continue consistently thereafter, with the ensuing “RIDE” dazzling with its stylish synth integrations. Chugging guitars and “don’t take it away,” vocal pleading rise into “always on my mind,” refrain; a bursting array of guitars and hooky vocals meld wonderfully here, as does the “you ride,” synth-forward repetition. “RIDE” is particularly impressive in its synth-rock aesthetical fit, with playful and atmospheric tones alike mingling melodically with spirited vocals and chirpy guitars. A tribute to Hrabar’s beloved, departed dog,  Ride, the track is a stirring success that emphasizes the value of life in the face of death. Similarly strong production qualities — with compelling guitar/synth interplay — captivate across “My Records Back,” another EP highlight, and one that caught our ears back in July. Its stylish, Metro-set music video also immerses — a setting seemingly reflected on the EP’s eye-catching cover art.

A strong one-two punch closes out the EP. “LOVE IS NOT” grips with its soaring, psych-friendly rock character, exuding heartfelt radiance in its expressive guitar tones and vocal precision — balancing lush hypnotics and invigorating anthemics. The finale “TANGERINE SOFA” touts a funky blissfulness in its bouncy bass line and glistening keys, engrossing especially in the “I know my way,” bass-y swell into a gorgeous conclusion, where wordless vocal layers and crisp guitars intertwine seamlessly. The Couch Cushion EP is a thorough success from Olivia Valentine.
