Night’s Bright Colors – ‘Lanterna Magica’

Catching our ears in 2023 with their self-titled debut album, Night’s Bright Colors follow it up with a similarly gripping full-length in Lanterna Magica. An assortment of jangly pop and anthemic rock heights intertwine, drawing upon inspirations that range from Brit-pop to ’90s alt-rock. The release is another delight from the Asheville, NC-based act.

Album opener “Woke Up” envelops in its psych-touched rock intrigue. “We’re swimming in the golden rays,” hypnotic vocals let out amidst twanging guitars; the illuminated descriptions pair with a bursting, melodic array of guitars for a thoroughly atmospheric appeal. The aesthetic therein reminds fondly of later-era Supergrass. “As Y Approaches Infinity” comes next, building with a breezier charm from a folk-set acoustic/electric intertwining to more radiant indie-pop soaring by mid-point. Lanterna Magica quickly showcases a knack for harmonious earworms, often in the dreamily inviting realms.

A multitude of highlights continue throughout. “The Libertine” laments “I can’t get this out of my head,” amidst recollections of soul-searching, moonlit nights. Jangling guitars and contagious vocal layers build into a gripping “oh-ohh,” enthusiasm and subsequent guitar frolicking, for an impactful melodic drive. “Eastern Thought” is another standout with its warming rock steadiness — showing shades of The Stone Roses, while “Spring Tomorrow” caps the release off with a comforting jangle-pop quaintness, prior to an affecting harder-rocking finale. Lanterna Magica is another thoroughly consuming success from Night’s Bright Colors.
