Los Angeles-based act My Satellite unveil an eclectic, hook-filled pop sound across their sophomore album, Person. Thematic reflections of a love story traverse across realms of funk, psychedelia, and rock within a consistent knack for satiating pop hooks. Their debut album Lift released in 2014, and over a decade later Person affirms that My Satellite craft thoroughly impressive productions.
Opening the album, “Minotaur” presents a gripping structural expanse — ascending from plucky, understated introspection into anthemic rock heights. “Because I’m a minotaur,” the stirring vocals let out amidst trickling guitars and pit-pattering percussion. The mid-point blasts off with enjoyable vigor, showcasing soaring vocals and ardent guitar lines reminding fondly of Muse. Another highlight comes in “Denial,” which struts a funky pop immediacy. The “inside of me,” second-half sequence is especially breathtaking, maneuvering seamlessly from punchy funk charisma to falsetto late-night atmospherics.
That higher-pitched vocal beauty is also apparent on “Farewell to Fantasy,” also achieving a funk-tinged intrigue across the verses that swells into a string-laden illumination; the chorus is heartrending in its vocal passion and effervescent production. “Morning” is a captivating finale, showing shades of Tame Impala in its psych-friendly bass buzzing and multi-layered vocal intensity. Person is a replay-inducing, immersive listening experience from My Satellite.
