Weirdos is the stirring new album from Man With A Corduroy Heart, the UK-based project of Ryan Davies. The album shines in its versatile folk and rock production, also strutting an eclectic charm — from shades of bossa-nova on “Mrs Mariana” to the opener’s good-time country-rock infusions. A knack for relatable lyrical introspection and hook-ready charisma persists throughout it all.
Opening track “House To Myself” enthuses over the occasional dose of solitude, and the ensuing desire to reconnect. The line “I got the house to myself this weekend,” exudes a celebratory quality as bluesy guitar bounces enter. A playful depiction of a self-care weekend — ordering pizza and watching The Sopranos — plays alongside a rollicking, melodic rock amiability. The previously featured “I’m a Little Bit Short” continues the relatability, lamenting “being a musician and running out of money,” per Davies, within a breezy folk-rock twanginess.
The album continues to shine thereafter, particularly with “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers Anymore,” where Davies’ vocals admit “I don’t wanna be old and sad,” and “I don’t wanna be my mom and dad,” amidst fears of disconnect. Tender, acoustic-forward complements build into the heartrending title-touting realization. “Weirdos” is another standout, celebrating individual oddities within relationships and how those qualities can strengthen bonds. “I’m a weirdo, but so are you,” Davies sings, marking one of many affecting moments throughout this enveloping album.
