Brooklyn-based rockers Lord Sonny the Unifier unveil a charismatic stylishness on “I Think We’ve Been Had,” a new single from their album You Were Born to Save Your Life. The track navigates seamlessly from ardent alt-rock raucousness and debonair funk-tinged rhythms, dazzling especially with the “about to crack,” melodic soulfulness past the two-minute turn. Alongside its compelling structural drive is very poignant theme, ruminating on the prevalence of psychopaths within leadership roles today.
The project is led by Greg Jiritano, who referencing the alarming study that 20 percent of those in executive or CEO roles are psychopaths. “The rise to power is easier to accomplish without empathy and concern for our brothers and sisters and so they do with a wink and a nod along with their fellow Psychopaths,” Jiritano says. “This is not the viewpoint of a paranoid victim or a dystopian sci-fi nightmares author, this is scientific research that is now becoming more acknowledged by the greater population, thankfully, finally. Perhaps through shining the light on them we can disinfect those institutions somewhat. Let’s pray for that.”
A suave assortment of piano, buzzing synths, and hazy guitars craft an atmospheric intro — moving quickly into the intensifying verses. “He never smiled, so he’d never know, and now he’s a pro,” the vocals let out, alluding to psychopathic tendencies and the dangerousness of those who exploit these characteristics to gain power. The track’s production stirs in its range between “messing with the wrong folk,” nonchalant feelings and more expressive vocal backings, and especially with the roaring guitar solo past the three-minute turn. “I Think We’ve Been Had” is a stellar, timely output from Lord Sonny The Unifier.
