Lauren Presley – “Can I Be Happy”

/

Both yearning introspection and rousing rock anthemics appeal on “Can I Be Happy,” a single out today from Nashville-based artist Lauren Presley. The second and final single from Presley’s upcoming EP, Hanging in the Balance, “Can I Be Happy” impresses in its dynamic tonal prowess and melodic, spirited vocal rises. Originally from Redwater, Texas, Presley continues to ascend — with her music achieving over 24.8 million views on YouTube and previous single “People Leave” going viral on TikTok.

“The pressure’s getting to me, this vicious cycle never ends,” Presley opens amidst trickling guitar momentum. The lyrical accounts of pressure are relatable — reflecting a sense of unrelentless weight — as the central chorus arrives. “Is there somewhere that can make me happy, halfway across the world?” she lets out, exuding themes of escapism that play with infectious sincerity. Her more reserved, contemplative tone within the verses build with enjoyably climactic fervor, while the chorus satiates fully in its invigorating call for inner-peace and a place beyond current tumult. “Can I Be Happy” has us firmly anticipating Presley’s upcoming EP.
