A memorable single out today from NYC-based artist Eleri Ward, “Float” melds a dreamy pop allure within themes of vulnerability — specifically, surrendering oneself and trusting in another. “What if I just feel into the pool?” Ward’s melodic vocals let out amidst lush piano twinkling. Lyrical depictions of falling into the water, unguarded, parallels with taking the plunge into a relationship. A title-touting vocal quivering continues the captivation as soothing backing vocals and melodic guitars enter; the lush, gorgeous structural ascent reminds fondly of Kate Bush.
The two-minute turn is another beautiful moment, featuring a heightened vocal pitch and lovely piano progression. Layers of beckoning vocals converge with this ghostly backing, arriving again into the “what if I just fell into the pool…” hook; this section, in particular, is enjoyably reminiscent of the duo Tennis. The gripping “Float” has us thoroughly anticipating Ward’s upcoming album.
