Brooklyn-based artist David Buchs crafts a gorgeous, hypnotic ambient allure on Letting Go, his fourth EP. Buchs’ songs embrace patiently unfolding structures and delicate atmospherics, consistently enamoring in their dreamy soundscapes. Recorded at his home studio, this particular EP struts a more chamber music immersion. Cello voices are utilized on two of the three tracks, while “Letting Go” and “The Spirit Within” feature “a drone like bed,” instead of Buchs’ previous tendency for synth pads. The result is a blissfully contemplative sound, exuding a warm sense of confidence and love in its spacious arrangements.
The EP’s track titles reflect a period of personal transformation for Buchs. “This music was written during my novitiate phase at The Order Of The Contemplative Life, a modern monastic expression based on the Jesuits,” he says. “The process of this change created a personal development with in me of ‘letting go’ of things that I always felt I needed to control. A process that will continue for the rest of my life. The titles of these tracks reflect my inner experience; to Let Go, discover The Spirit Within, and Rest In My Love, or the love from a God voice that is not critical.”
“Letting Go” opens the EP with serene entrancement, intertwining cello and the peaceful aforementioned drone-like undercurrent. More upfront strings conjure a more apparent emotion at the three-minute turn, unveiling with gorgeous precision. “The Spirit Within” feels illuminated and effervescent in what resembles heavenly, angelic voices that move in effortlessly. “Remain In My Love” closes the EP in similarly stellar form, alternating between weepy strings and twinkling intrigue. Letting Go is a thoroughly immersive ambient success from David Buchs.
