References to “hairspray and mixtapes,” combine with an 808-style synth allure for a strong dose of nostalgic fun on “All Good Hair Bands,” a track out today from Adam + Attack by Fire. The Apex, North Carolina-based project is fronted by Adam Tarsitano, a singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer who formed Adam + Attack by Fire in 2019. “I have always wanted to create a synth driven song and finally had an opportunity to do it,” he says of the track, which aims to capture the “a high level of bombast in a lot of the music from the 1980s.”
A steady rhythmic pit-pattering complements twinkling and buzzing synth overlapping to start, as moody guitars reflect alongside. “All good hair bands go to heaven,” a radiant hook admits, while the guitar-fronted verses reflect more historically serious events– references to incoming war and “the Berlin Wall is falling.” The pairing of comforting ’80s nostalgia — “we’re smoking cigarettes in bathroom stalls,” — with more serious events. Adam + Attack by Fire thoroughly succeed in blending throwback amiability and more solemn accounts, all within a consistently melodic array of guitars and synths. Like any quality ’80s music setting, “All Good Hair Bands” is easy to put on replay.
