The Northern Light – “Secrets”

/

Seattle-based band The Northern Light impress with a moody yet climactic rock appeal with newly released single “Secrets.” Its creative spark arose in 2022, singer/guitarist David Pollon travelled to southwestern Ontario. He came up with much of the track’s lyrics whilst sitting on Lake Huron’s shore, with the music initially composed on ukulele. The band — also including Kip Rondorf on drums and Carl Larsson on bass/synths — later transformed “Secrets” into a more expansive rock success.

“Dreaming in the square, by the great unsalted sea,” the vocals establish a contemplative setting, complemented by slight percussion and moody guitar trickles. Ruminations on the “weight of the years,” arise into an ardent uptick in energy, as the vocals beckon to “take me away.” The ascending vibrancy in the vocals and guitars build with gripping momentum. The mid-point further excels in its descriptions of a forthcoming storm as the instrumentation achieves a brisk entrancement, as a scorching guitar emphasis concludes “Secrets” with satiating impact.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
