Brooklyn-based artist Mitchell Leonard crafts an inviting, electronic journey throughout his new track “session_operators.” Calming synths pair with a computer-filtered vocal effect, asking “if I float, will you come float with me?” and arriving into the meaningful central declaration: “Session operators show you what you need to see.” That line refers to the release’s primary concept, depicting a world wherein the artist is the operator, and provides an invitation to listeners to venture into a shared creative space. The mutual space of creativity is thus created, and aligns with the heady and successful art that Leonard tends to produce — focusing on multimedia experiences and narration within memorable musical outputs.
Accompanied by a music video (above), made with animator and director Jared D. Weiss, “session_operators” takes inspiration from Leonard’s experiences with live Twitch streams. The lyrical references to journeying together is reflective of the collaborative power of these live streams, wherein artists can share auditory and emotive representations in real-time; with that, the artist essentially becomes a “session operator” and creator of a lens for viewing art. That modern, poignant thematic pursuit melds with an intriguing electronic-forward sound to make “session_operators” a definitive success.
