New York-based HeIsTheArtist crafts a striking cover of the Erykah Badu classic “Out Of My Mind, Just in Time,” melding neo-soul and alt-rock aesthetics for an atmospheric, affecting sound. “Lyrically, it’s a confession of all the foolish things one does when stuck in a harmful dynamic,” HeIsTheArtist says. “Sonically, it’s designed to feel like being trapped in a cycle, yet yearning for freedom.” The release comes via the artist’s forthcoming EP, Confessions of a Fallen Angel, out on February 14th.
Heart-on-sleeve, vulnerable emotion is palpable throughout. “I’m a recovering, undercover, over-lover,” the vocals let out amidst a ghostly backing, moving within a textured rock arsenal. The references to “recovering,” is apt, as the upcoming EP is described as an exploration of addiction recovery; each track represents “a different stage of the recovery journey.” This particular track represents the final stage: maintenance. “This is where you take accountability for past toxic behavior, a crucial step for sustained healing,” HeIsTheArtist says.
The track proves especially gripping in its dynamics between haunting soulfulness and erupting guitar layers. “And I’d lie for you,” marks an especially affecting expanse, fondly reminiscent of Yves Tumor’s melodic brooding. “Out My Mind, Just in Time” has us fully anticipating the upcoming EP from HeIsTheArtist.
