UK-based quintet Dunebug balance spirited rock charisma and palpable yearning on new single “Terracotta.” They describe the stellar release as “the first track we’ve made that encapsulates the sound we wanted when we first formed.” The band is also prepping a full-length album. “Terracotta” certainly showcases the act’s knack for quality songwriting, alternating seamlessly between “is that the way it is?” emotive questioning and more debonair initial strides.
A strong thematic hold shows as well, concerning a relationship where one is longing for things to be different. “They wish that things didn’t have to be this way, and that they could ‘kiss the frost from your lips’ – or rather take away the cold things said with a kiss,” the band explains. They note Smashing Pumpkins as a primary influence, and such is apparent in the title-touting refrain and jangling guitars that conclude this memorable effort.
Blaring guitar distortion unleashes an initial blast of nostalgia, invoking a Pixies-esque glow as the wordless, dreamy backing vocals bolster the heady guitar mix. The lead vocals emerge thereafter as shimmering guitars and steady bass remain. “Terracotta” unfolds with satiating effect through its conclusion, excelling especially during the aforementioned “kiss the front from your lips,” hook. “Terracotta” has us firmly anticipating whatever’s next from Dunebug.
