Two recent tracks from Big Suze showcase the project’s knack for melodically inviting introspection. Last year’s “Kevin 1” compels across its relatable narrative prowess, described as a “a song for when you and your roommate are anti-social but go to the function anyway.” Shades of Stephen Malkmus show fondly in the stream-of-conscious lyrical vibe. “We ain’t gonna talk to anybody,” anti-social lyrical perspectives compel into the “I don’t feel the need,” halted momentum and twanging “don’t need your company,” angst — resulting in a replay-inducing success.
The more recent “Louie” is a love song with the setting of Manhattan’s west side. “Louie, are you working late?” the opening vocals beckon, moving from quaint acoustics into tender guitar tones and warming vocal yearning. The mellow vocal disposition moves cohesively within an array of brass-touched “working late,” ruminations and jangling tonal ascents. Both these tracks are thorough winners from Big Suze.
