Baz Edmondson – ‘From The Father Tree’ EP

Dorset-based singer/songwriter Baz Edmondson crafts an affecting sound throughout his upcoming EP, From The Father Tree, out on February 24th. Its aesthetical versatility spanning from subdued acoustics and bursting orchestral passion, From The Father Tree also compels with its relatable thematic pursuits — from the ode to parenthood “The Shepherd’s Lullaby” to hopes for renewal and recovery from loss within “Fair Winds & Calm Seas.”

“Ladybird Red” opens the EP with heartfelt captivation, propelled by a gripping vocal intimacy that builds beautifully amidst twinkling piano and lush strings. “In the season of the garden sun, is where I see you,” Edmondson calls out, venturing into a second half that enamors in its vibrant uptick in piano and string emotion. Another success comes in the ensuing track “The Shepherd’s Lullaby,” an ode to parenthood and the enduring bond between a parent and child. “I’ll hold a candle to the night,” Edmondson sings, invoking the role of protector and guide as a father; prancing keys, strumming acoustics, and introspective strings swell alongside in gorgeous form. From The Father Tree wastes no time impressing with this strong commencing one-two punch.

The album’s blissful mid-point comes via “Shipwright’s Dandelion,” an instrumental gem with bird-chirping, airy synth pads, and illuminated piano leading the way. The calming, meditative build-up arrives into a fervent array of strings across the second half, satiating with its re-emphasis on piano as the conclusion arrives. “Fair Winds & Calm Seas” continues the dynamic tonal builds, melding sailor-perspective imagery with a range of quaint acoustic-folk and charismatic chamber-pop orchestration. “Wills Fallow” ends the EP with similar strengths, with twangy guitars and an orchestral glow capping off this standout release from Baz Edmondson.
