Bad Bubble – ‘A Well Devised Plan’

The newly released album from Chicago-based artist Bad Bubble, A Well Devised Plan melds a blend of atmospheric and ardent productions alike, within a continuing narrative centered around the artist’s daughter, Anna. “My daughter may not have had the chance to live, but I promised her that I would tell the world she was here,” Bad Bubble explains. “Through this music, I’m creating her world—a space where she is known, remembered, and loved.” The result has been a multitude of releases, captivating with their evident sincerity and electronic-forward productions.

“Toska Knell” kicks off the album with a palpably atmospheric charm. Heartfelt strings and clanging keys traverse with patiently unfolding intrigue. “Beauty Burger” follows with an emotive opening call: “I’ll be here, burning a hole right through your heart again.” The moody vocals convey loneliness and waning strength amidst a moody electronic pop appeal; the album’s opening two tracks showcase Bad Bubble’s compelling range, from both instrumental atmospherics to vocal-led pieces of pop emotion.

Highlights are abound throughout, notably in the form of “Iowa.” Wintry, solemn piano and elegant strings accompany a heartfelt vocal presence. A poetic lyrical prowess is evident in the thematic aims, described by Bad Bubble as about “building something which you and only you seem to love. And having to walk away when all avenues of success have been foreclosed.” Escalated vocal emotion at mid-point sends chills. From other highlights like fellow ballad-ready gem “The Fourth Egg” and rousing electro-rock cut “Overwear,” A Well Devised Plan boasts a quality output of songwriting throughout.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
