A quaintly impactful new track from Austin McGrath, “Colored Lights” seamlessly infuses twinkling keys and folk-forward acoustic introspection amidst McGrath’s serene vocal presence. A full DIY endeavor, “Colored Lights” was crafted in the artist’s home studio — and the result is a warming, illuminated sound that embraces bedroom/lo-fi pop charms in its mixture of solemn folk and “do I have to carry you?” glistening keys.
“I’m so afraid of the day today, every day’s like yesterday,” McGrath laments into the title-touting sequence, referencing “colored lights,” as keys aptly weave in. The aforementioned lyrical drive references a thematic aim within, that relating to romantic crushes and eventual disappointment. :But also how it can be comforting when you find it,” McGrath adds. “Also about dealing with the doing the same thing over and over. That’s scary.” The Starkville, Mississippi-based artist caught our attention last year with the track “Set Me Loose,” and continues to enthrall here with “Colored Lights.”
