Delivering an emotively impactful blend of folk and pop, Everything Life Throws is the memorable new EP from The Report. The duo is based in Kingston upon Thames, England — and comprises Hugo Allen on vocals/guitar and Jo Rogers on keys/vocals. The EP draws deeply from the duo’s personal experiences of loss, including Jo’s father’s passing and the death of a close friend; the duo channel these moments into themes of resilience and carrying forward the spirit of those who were very cherished. Through these stories, the songs reflect on how loss can inspire acts of remembrance, devotion, and collective strength.
“What You Don’t Know” kickstarts the EP with a melodic immediacy. “She doesn’t know her mind, that’s for people who want to find it,” introspective lyricism pairs with frolicking piano — venturing into bright title-touting charm, with a bright power-pop enthusiasm. Harmonious backing vocals add across the second half, in lovely form. The subsequent “Voices” builds with a more elegant intrigue, where lush vocals build to an atmospheric “in the night,” ascent — traversing beautifully from piano-driven haunts into glimpses of string-laden melancholy.
EP finale “Not Over” is especially memorable, letting out “I don’t belong to you or anybody else,” with powerful effect into the gorgeous “it’s not over,” central hook. There, interweaving vocal layers from Allen and Rogers meld with crisp acoustics and melodic piano for a seamless immersion. Everything Life Throws is a heartfelt yet melodically approachable success from The Report, exploring loss with tactful captivation.
