A melodic rock sophistication enamors throughout Through the Needles Eye, the new album from Smooth Retsina Glow. The Bethlehem, PA-based band formed in 2019, and have wowed with a dynamic vein of rock since then. The album continues that immersion, ranging from tender, twinkling duets like “Feigning Grace” to fervent doses of rock charisma in the vein of “Ralapse Collapse.” A strong musicianship is on display from the project’s lead players — comprising guitarist/vocalist Colin Wolf, vocalist Natalie Expraxia, and drummer Quincy Wellen. Inventive structural twists/turns, clever key changes, and a range of moods envelop within.
“Against Any Odds” opens the album with a brisk rock pace. “No matter what comes I’ll prevail,” the vocals of Wolf and Expraxia, leading with vigor into bluesy guitar touches. Dreamier efforts like “Lockstep” enthrall as well; Expraxia’s blissful vocal presence carries alongside hazy guitar strums and spacey synth adornments. “Virtuality” is another showcase in soulful, lush immersion — again propelled by Expraxia’s vocals alongside Wolf’s magnetic guitar tones and Wellen’s impeccable rhythmic precision. Through the Needles Eye is a stirring success from Smooth Retsina Glow.
