‘SkyBabyRecords Est. 1999 – A 25th Anniversary Celebration’

SkyBabyRecords celebrates their 25th anniversary this year, and marks the occasion with a collection of 25 riveting tracks that span various realms — from heartrending string-laden folk like “The Same Place” to efforts like “The Disappearance,” where lush electronic effects intermingle beautifully with somber strings and sporadic vocals. The label is where composer/songwriter Paul Terry releases his various projects and soundtracks — impressing in its prolific and consistently high-quality output.

SkyBabyRecords has released 550+ tracks, including 30+ original soundtracks, since 1999 — so digging into this captivating catalog could feel a bit daunting. That’s where this excellent compilation comes in, providing an eclectic taste of Terry’s imaginative songwriting and productions. It’s difficult to find a style and mood the project doesn’t touch upon; acoustic, pop, rock, orchestral, jazz, electronic, and metal pursuits linger within — as do compositions fit for genres spanning from thriller and horror to drama and comedy.

“The Lone Moon Incident” commences the release with enthralling atmospheric immersion. Foreboding strings are layered with intrigue, as ghostly vocals and intense second-half ardency arises into the murky rock entrancement of “Epinephrine.” A grungy rock drive builds into a cathartic, emotive vocal unveiling in the finale. Elsewhere, chamber-folk “This Is A Shelter” beckons for the storm to come as jangling acoustics and moving strings accompany, while “Switching Genres” is apt in its darkly cinematic melding of whirring strings and ominous spaciousness. The 25th Anniversary Celebration from SkyBabyRecords is a compellingly eclectic tour-de-force that enjoyably showcases Terry’s talents.

“Epinephrine” and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
