London-based act Rothko enthrall across their new album Eleven Stages Of Intervention; its production is steeped in atmospheric beauty, featuring a range of string-laden chills, moody guitar tones, and textural swells beyond. The project caught our attention with last year’s atmospheric album Bury My Heart In The Mountains. Their latest album, Eleven Stages Of Intervention is described as “a re-imagined and remastered version from the original master mixes from 2007.”
Mark Beazley, who has been releasing music under the Rothko name since 1999, features alongside a talented lineup on this release — including bassist Michael Donnelly, drummer Tom Page, and multi-instrumentalist Ben Page. That group comprises the longest-running iteration of Rothko, spanning from 2004 to 2010. The variety of tracks on the album enamor, from the gentle piano and spacey synth intertwining within “Weather Every Storm” to the range of twinkling keys and moody guitar crawls on “Break The Cycle Of Sorrow.”
“Tell Your Story To The Winds” is another standout, casting a twangy intrigue in its assembly of forlorn guitars and textured flourishes — intermingling a spacey electronic tint with traditional folk intrigue. Finale “The Twelth Stage…” is a lovely send-off that feels parts lush and haunting, being a meditative blend of all the album’s tracks. Eleven Stages Of Intervention is a thorough success from Rothko, abundant in riveting atmosphere and structural developments.
