Play Misty – “Winter in Bristol”

/

An expanding folk success with a gorgeous wintertime contemplation, “Winter in Bristol” comes via Bristol, England-based trio Play Misty — comprising Ryan McMurtry, Sophie Jones and I-Sha-Vii. Warming flute and mandolin complement the solemn acoustic drive, aided by McMurtry’s vocal lead and the trio’s backing three-part harmonies. The vintage reel-to-reel tape recording bolsters the already-warm enchantment, feeling like a warm fireplace following a long journey out into a frozen tundra.

Described as “about a stumble home through Castle Park in Bristol,” “Winter in Bristol” develops with heartfelt captivation. Descriptions of the setting in Bristol, in addition to being “drunken and lost,” sets the stage for an introspective charm. “Could they hold anything?” the vocals ponder, marveling at frail cold trees, while yearning for the feeling of “holding you.” The “sure as the rain,” comforting refrain ensues, as does the gorgeous flute calmness thereafter. A plucky vibrancy builds into a final “if I could you,” spine-tingling, capping this excellent track off with gentle vocal harmonies and steady guitars.

The track is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Emerging Indie Folk. Stream the playlist below:
