A rousing rock success that speaks to experiences of exclusion, “In Club” comes via London-based artist Fiona Amaka. The track has seen live iterations in both acoustic-fronted and rock styles, and this stellar studio version — recorded with Andy Zanini — embraces that rock spectrum, while still maintaining a soulful introspection.
Amaka explains that the release is “about the experience of being excluded from a group that you might feel is important when people think you are too this or too that to be welcome.” She continues: “But it’s also an ode to thriving and surviving – knowing that your people are out there for you and holding on to your shine!”
Steady guitar pulses complement Amaka’s heartfelt vocals, lyrically exploring a drive for acceptance into the resonating central hook. “I’m on the outside,” she sings within a melodically impactful range of twanging acoustics and sturdy electric guitars; the sound reminds fondly of Suede’s more emotive, later-era material. “In Club” traverses further in its “fighting the pain,” conveyances and hooky rock spirit, particularly within the rising vocals and the three-minute turn approaches. “In Club” is a memorable showing from Fiona Amaka.
