A melodic, introspective jazz sound impresses throughout It’ll Always Work Out, the project of Bay Area-based artist Bennett Roth. Assuming the role of bandleader here — following a career that has also seen success as a music director, composer, and sideman — Roth directs a magnetic sound within a traditional jazz trio setting. Stellar musicianship is on display throughout, embracing a colorful array of styles — from funk and samba to hip-hop and fusion — amidst rewarding improvisation and tonal dynamics.
Centering around the encouraging ethos reflected in its title, the album grips right away with the opening title track. A starry-eyed, melancholic piano drive stirs initially, and is quickly perked up by brisk percussion and lounge-friendly piano tones. The hints of samba and Latin-inspired percussion emanate beautifully within, as well. Another highlight, “Our Village” builds on gentle piano and pit-pattering rhythms with a contemplative calmness. More vibrant bass and frolicking piano tones, illuminating in their emotion, adorn an enveloping second half.
The album concludes with two magnetic tracks in “Dream Of Vee” and “Turning Heads.” The former embraces a sense of yearning in its piano-led first half, launching with passionate emotion into a fervent send-off thereafter. “Turning Heads” ends the release with a consistent vibrancy in its piano and backing rhythms, satiating in its refreshing glistening and melodic pace. It’ll Always Work Out is an alluring jazz success from Bennett Roth.
