An exceptional debut EP from London-based artist SHY PUMA, DON’T RUSH ME presents a dynamic and emotive sound. Soul, R&B, psychedelic, and electronic elements converge seamlessly, within themes that explore the human condition in relatable form — spanning from heartbreak to personal growth and self-acceptance.
“It was a moment, just you and me,” a lush vocal entrancement takes hold on opening track “moments,” conveying a blissfully hypnotic immersion in the understated vocals and jangly guitar fluidity. The “stop fighting, look at each other,” sequence continues the compelling qualities, and leading seamlessly into the soulful “what if” — pondering the passage of time, and sending chills in the “I’m thinking of you,” admissions as trickling guitars arrive alongside. The EP engrosses right away with this very strong opening one-two punch.
The EP thoroughly impresses across its five tracks, and “i didn’t know” stands out especially well for its vulnerable vocal admissions — repeating the title with heartfelt inducement — and steady structural expanse; quaint guitar twangs develop with intrigue into various vocal layers and “I should’ve known / it broke my bones,” invigoration. DON’T RUSH ME is a fantastic EP with an abundance of gripping songwriting from SHY PUMA.
