Nick Marks – “Into The Void”

//

New York-based artist Nick Marks caps off a very strong 2024 with the ravishing single “Into The Void,” representing the penultimate track approaching the release of new EP, Cinematic Chromatics Vol. III. Look for that in early 2025, and in the meantime get lost in the soulful, grooving stylishness of “Into The Void.” The production continues Marks’ penchant for featuring an array of talented musicians, here including Arta Jēkabsone on vocals, Doron Lev on drums/beat programming, horns from Andrew Gould, Sam Dillon (Mingus Big Band) and Dave Levy (LCD Sound System, Ray Angry, Norah Jones), in addition to Sarpay Ozçagatay on flute.

An atmospheric, nostalgic inspiration takes hold throughout. Marks describes the effort as morphing “between my worlds in cinematic jazztronica with R&B and Neo-Soul influences.” He continues: “The track has a futuristic sound to it, kind of reminding me of traveling through time and space at hyper speed, while also nodding to elements of ‘Thriller’ with the choice of synth sounds combined with horns.”

Lavish strings, spacey synth twinkling, and a soulful vocal wordlessness converge with captivating effect to commence the track. A funky rhythmic drive arrives alongside thereafter, enchanting further. Jēkabsone’s vocals then assume a more upfront serenity amidst twinkling piano — moving seamlessly into a lovely assortment of woodwinds, brass, and rhythmic charisma. The track marks another ravishing, melodic success from Marks, who has caught our ears this year with cuts like “Dedication (for Gabi)” and “Champs-Élysées.”

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
