Messy Eater – “I’m A Mess Right Now”

/

The second single from Messy Eater, “I’m A Mess Right Now” stirs with its debonair ’90s pop nostalgia and fervent title-referencing hook. Messy Eater represents the York, UK-based music and illustration project of Pete Bott, who cites Odelay-era Beck as a particular inspiration for this stylish track. “I’m a mess right now, I’m learning not to worry,” blaring vocals convey amidst a funky rhythmic drive and glistening synths, traversing into a shade of bossa-nova as the satiating conclusion arrives; the track is a dynamic, melodic tour-de-force and envelops throughout.

Beyond the memorable central hook, the production enamors in its nifty aesthetical push — venturing from suave vocals, “waiting here for the gravy train,” a clarinet-laden sample, and retro drums into the “mess right now,” proclamation. “I’m A Mess Right Now” balances creativity and hooky immediacy, and has us firmly anticipating Messy Eater’s upcoming debut EP, Starters.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
