MAXIIM – ‘Swimming’

Paris-based artist MAXIIM crafts an emotional, piano-led sound throughout the new album Swimming — described as “an introspective journey filled with hope.” Spaciously serene balladry and satisfying tonal escalations show with heartfelt qualities within the release, which represents a thorough success from MAXIIM.

Glistening piano adorn a hypnotic title-touting refrain on the opening “Swimming (Above Your Troubles),” showcasing the artist’s masterful blend of piano-set quaintness and electro-pop intrigue. “In the Name of Love” follows in admitting “I have lost myself,” as the piano work swells gradually into a fervent climax — then falling into a graceful, dreamy contemplation. Swimming consistently compels in its heart-on-sleeve, structurally swelling builds.

A variety of highlights continue throughout. “You Fly in My Spirit” enamors with a brisker twinkling, quickly accompanied by a thumping rhythmic component. “I won’t let you go, I feel something grow,” the vocals let out. “Now your face is coming alive.” A chilly, emotional embrace takes hold here — especially as the reflective synths enter shortly thereafter. Album finale “Bloom of Love” is a gorgeously satiating piano instrumental, wrapping up the album with warming immersion.

“Swimming (Above Your Troubles)” and other tracks can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Rainy Days and Late Night Drives’ Spotify playlist.
