Vancouver-based singer/songwriter Hawk Björn shows a heartrending, melodic sound with power-pop and soft-rock charm — strongly apparent across the Alchemy EP. “Time to be free, at the end of the road,” Hawk lets out during magnetic opener “End Of The Road,” a stirring kick-off that appeals in both its piano-set introspection and harmonious vocal layering. The “more love to give,” is a particularly strong hook, celebrating the myriad of emotions that life will provide ahead — even after the loss of a partner. The EP thematically emphasizes living life to the fullest, and the opener certainly embodies those sentiments.
The EP’s other four tracks are similarly captivating, ranging from the yearning rock spirit of “One More Time” to the heartfelt pop playfulness within “Hang On To Love.” The latter is especially replay-inducing with its title-touting vocal refrain, moving amiabily amidst bouncy keys and ’80s-friendly synth adornments. The repeating vocal ethos is another concise embodiment of the album’s thematic aims — capturing the pains of heartache and loss, though also the will to pick oneself up again, treasure the wonderful memories, and celebrate what’s ahead.
